Meet Marie K

Marie K Passerbuys

Marie was born in Melbourne, Australia. When she finished high school she studied fashion for a year at Melbourne School of Fashion. She dropped out because she was also working full-time in Magazine Printing and couldn’t keep up with the work load. After that, she decided to take a makeup artist course and became a Makeup Artist full-time for around 6 years. During that period she also became a National Makeup artist for Chanel. She has always been a creative person but at some point decided to turn her creative outlet into a hobby and took on painting and drawing. The only thing that she disliked about growing up in Australia is how it’s so far from everything, so she packed her bag and decided to explore the world while also getting paid to. She moved to Dubai and worked for Emirates for 7 years, then moved to London to work for British Airways. Her most valuable item is her passport. It’s her escape hatch, she carries it everywhere.

ON HER MORNING ROUTINE

I don’t have a body clock or a routine because I travel so much. I do have to organize my sleeping according to my flying schedule for the month though; sometimes I have early reports and sometimes late reports, so I try and adjust my sleeping accordingly. I try to allow some time to myself before I officially wake up and I limit myself to half an hour of reading through emails and social media while dropping the phone a few times onto my face. I travel mainly to the US for work, which I love, and I tend to walk loads when I’m there or get around on a bike. I’ll only rent a car in places like LA because it’s so spread out.

On Her Skincare Routine

I have noticed as I’ve gotten older, I put a lot of effort in my skincare routine and I love trying new products. I have about 6 cleansers on the go depending on my mood. The Koh Gen Do Cleansing Spa Water Cloths are amazing for taking my makeup off and I always pack them when I’m traveling, 1 sheet takes the whole day off. I double cleanse as well, so I usually follow with Omorovicza Thermal Cleansing Balm, you massage it in for a few minutes and wipe it off with a warm cloth. Next I apply the Dr. Dennis Gross Extra Strength Alpha Beta Peel Wipes. There are two steps, the first step you leave on for a minute and then you neutralize it with step two. During the daytime I use the Dr. Sebagh Serum Repair and mix in some Dr. Sebagh Vitamin C Powder followed by my moisturiser. At the moment I’m using the Omorovicza Illuminating Moisturiser and the La Mer Illuminating Eye Gel. I always apply SPF on top, I use the Heliocare 360 Gel Oil Free SPF50 and I love Institut Esthederm SPF for the body. Before I go to bed after I’ve cleansed my skin, I apply the La Mer Treatment Lotion followed by Peter Thomas Roth Professional 3% Retinoid Plus. This product is my holy grail, my skin feels more toned and smoother. I finish off with an oil, either the Omorovicza Miracle Oil or the La Mer Renewal Oil mixed into my moisturiser.

Marie's favorite makeup products
I believe in that you should go where you are celebrated, not tolerated. That sums up a lot of leaving Australia for Dubai for me, and the fact that I felt Australia was just too far away from the rest of the world. I love living in big cities and after my stint in Dubai, which is such a transitory place, I felt I accomplished everything I needed to. I also met my boyfriend while I was living there and he happened to be from London. So the natural step was for me to move to London. It took me a while to fall in love with London, it wasn’t instant, but I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else in the world now.

Her Beauty TipS

It’s important not to go to sleep straight after applying your nighttime skincare products, wait at least 30 minute. This keeps the products from seeping into your pillowcase and insures that you get the maximum absorption. I try and do a mask every couple of days. I love the masks from Sisley, Dr. Sebagh Skin Perfecting Mask and Omorovicza Ultramoor Mud Mask. I never leave the house without a spray of my favourite perfume. At the moment I’m using Fleur Narcotique by Ex Nihilo and Santa Maria Novella Cinquanta. For makeup I like to use Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, Anastasia Brow Pencil, Smashbox 24 Hour Photo Finish Shadow Primer and Becca Ultimate Coverage Complexion Cream.

ON HER AESTHETIC

My general aesthetic goes back to authenticity. If your look is overthought, overworked and tries too hard, that is a big no-no for me. It’s all about a certain ease of being. I definitely create my own mental trends that i follow and I like to let fashion trends inform my look in order to keep my style “modern”. I tend to shop literally everywhere around the world because of my job. But I also purchase a lot online.

On Her favorite Place

The Brion Cemetery in San Vito d’Altivole, in the province of Treviso, is a building and space designed by the architect Carlos Scarpa. It is by far one of my favourite spaces and I am planning a trip there in the summer, to unplug myself from it all. The Brion Tomb is a really evocative place, a garden where the water and the forms combined heterogeneous materials – concrete, bronze, glass, granite, brass, copper and marble that guide visitors toward meditation and a calm reflection.
